Top 25 Rankings for the Week of Dec. 8

1. Kentucky (9-0). Last week: 1

Kentucky continues to look unstoppable. The Wildcats knocked off Texas by 12 points and then blew out Eastern Kentucky last week.

2. Duke (8-0). Last week: 4

Duke upset Wisconsin on the road in what could very possibly be the Blue Devils’ toughest game all season. They are off this week, returning to action next Monday against Elon.

3. Arizona (8-0). Last week: 3

Arizona held off Gonzaga in overtime to remain unbeaten. The Wildcats host Michigan, which just lost to NJIT, Saturday.

4. Wisconsin (8-1). Last week: 2

Wisconsin bounced back from a home loss to Duke with a 49-38 win at Marquette. The Badgers have another rivalry game Wednesday at Milwaukee.

5. Villanova (8-0). Last week: 5

Villanova won a pair of Big 5 games last week against La Salle and St. Joseph’s. The Wildcats face Illinois at the Jimmy V Classic this week.

6. Virginia (9-0). Last week: 6

Virginia has won four straight games, all away from home. The last two were true road games against Maryland and VCU.

7. Louisville (7-0). Last week: 9

Louisville got a big win against Ohio State and followed that with a blowout of Florida International. The Cardinals face Indiana at the Jimmy V Classic this week.

8. Gonzaga (7-1). Last week: 8

Gonzaga fell short at Arizona but played a great game to take the Wildcats into overtime. The Bulldogs can get a quality win Saturday at UCLA.

9. Texas (7-1). Last week: 12

Texas finally lost, but it was at Kentucky. And the Longhorns are without starting point guard Isaiah Taylor, who is injured. They have an easy stretch that should produce three wins coming up, with games against Texas State, Lipscomb and Long Beach State.

10. Wichita State (5-1). Last week: 7

Wichita State’s lost to Utah for their first regular season defeat since March 2013, but the Shockers bounced back with a thrashing of St. Louis. They host an unbeaten Seton Hall team Tuesday.

11. Kansas (6-1). Last week: 11

Kansas erased an 18-point deficit Friday to defeat Florida at home. The Jayhawks have a tough week ahead with games against Georgetown and Utah.

12. Ohio State (6-1). Last week: 14

Ohio State struggled at Louisville but had no trouble with Colgate Saturday. The Buckeyes host High Point and Morehead State, two mid-majors expected to compete for their respective conference titles, this week.

13. Iowa State (5-1). Last week: 15

Iowa State got its first win against a ranked team Thursday, defeating Arkansas. The Cyclones face rival Iowa Friday.

14. Butler (7-1). Last week: Unranked

Butler has won three straight games after beating Indiana State and Northwestern last week. After hosting Kennesaw State, the Bulldogs play their second true road game of the year Saturday at Tennessee.

15. Utah (6-1). Last week: Unranked

Utah picked up a huge overtime win against Wichita State last week. The Utes have another pair of tough opponents, BYU and Kansas, coming up.

16. North Carolina (6-2). Last week: 10

North Carolina bounced back from a home loss to Iowa with a 44-point win against East Carolina.

17. Oklahoma (5-2). Last week: 17

Oklahoma rebounded from a loss to Wisconsin with an 82-63 win against Missouri. The Sooners are on the road this week against Tulsa.

18. Washington (7-0). Last week: Unranked

Washington cracks the Top 25 after knocking off San Diego State by 13 points. The Huskies host an Eastern Washington team Sunday that upset Indiana a few weeks ago.

19. San Diego State (6-2). Last week: 13

San Diego State has lost two of its last three games, most recently falling to Washington.

20. St. John’s (6-1). Last week: Unranked

St. John’s has wins against Minnesota and Syracuse away from home, and its only loss is to Gonzaga. The Johnnies should add a pair of wins this week with home games against Fairleigh Dickinson and Fordham.

21. Seton Hall (7-0). Last week: Unranked

Seton Hall is still looking for a marquee win — which it can get at Wichita State Tuesday — but it already has a respectable victory against George Washington.

22. Miami Fla. (8-1). Last week: 16

Miami’s perfect start ended with a 13-point loss at home to Green Bay. The Hurricanes remain home this week for Savannah State.

23. Maryland (8-1). Last week: 22

Maryland’s perfect start ended with a loss to Virginia, but the Terrapins bounced back by beating Winthrop.

24. Colorado State (8-0). Last week: Unranked

Colorado State is yet to play a true road game — the first is Wednesday against in-state rival Colorado — but the Rams have solid home wins against Georgia State and UTEP.

25. Northern Iowa (8-0). Last week: Unranked

Northern Iowa is looking like a legitimate contender in the MVC alongside Wichita State. The Panthers will be tested on the road this week against Denver and VCU.
