Mid-Major Rankings for the Week of Dec. 8

1. Gonzaga (7-1). Last week: 2

Gonzaga took Arizona into overtime on the road before losing by three points. The Bulldogs face two more Pac-12 opponents, Washington State and UCLA, this week.

2. Wichita State (5-1). Last week: 1

Wichita State bounced back from its first loss of the season with an easy win against Saint Louis. The Shockers host undefeated Seton Hall Tuesday.

3. Northern Iowa (8-0). Last week: 3

Northern Iowa will play two true road games this week, its first since Nov. 18. The Panthers face Denver and VCU.

4. Harvard (6-1). Last week: 4

Harvard needed two overtimes to defeat Vermont but eventually got the job done. The Crimson host Boston University Monday before taking a 13-day break.

5. BYU (7-2). Last week: 5

BYU has won three straight games since the Maui Invitational. The Cougars host in-state rival Utah this week with a chance for a big-time win.

6. Georgia State (6-2). Last week: 12

Georgia State got its first quality win Thursday, knocking off Green Bay 72-48. The Panthers are off until next Wednesday.

7. Old Dominion (6-1). Last week: 8

Old Dominion has won three straight games. The Monarchs begin a five-game home stand Sunday against North Carolina A&T.

8. Saint Mary’s (5-1). Last week: 6

Saint Mary’s picked up its first loss Saturday to Boise State. The Gaels will be challenged again this coming Saturday at Creighton.

9. Wofford (7-2). Last week: 10

Wofford has an opportunity for a big win this week at NC State.

10. Louisiana Tech (7-1). Last week: 11

Louisiana Tech has won six straight games but lacks noteworthy wins. The Bulldogs can get a huge one Sunday at Syracuse.

11. Green Bay (6-2). Last week: 15

Green Bay bounced back from a loss at Georgia State with a win at previously unbeaten Miami (Fla.). The Phoenix return home Saturday for Drake. This is their first home game of the season against a Division I opponent.

12. Yale (8-2). Last week: 19

Yale upset Connecticut on a Jack Montague buzzer-beater Friday. The Bulldogs look for another huge win Monday at Florida.

13. Florida Gulf Coast (8-1). Last week: 16

Florida Gulf Coast knocked of UMass on a neutral site for a solid win. The Eagles host Florida International in their only game this week.

14. Belmont (7-1). Last week: 17

Belmont has won fours straight games since dropping its season opener. The Bruins enter a tough five-game stretch that includes games against Evansville, VCU and Butler.

15. Stephen F. Austin (6-3). Last week: 14

Stephen F. Austin has won five straight games after losing three in a row. The Lumberjacks continue a four-game home stand this week with games against North Texas and Texas State.

16. Evansville (6-1). Last week: 20

Evansville knocked off Wright State and IUPUI last week and continues to look like a possible MVC contender. The Aces will be tested this week against Belmont and Murray State.

17. UTEP (4-3). Last week: 7

UTEP has played a tough schedule, and it shows. After a 4-0 start, the Miners have lost three games in a row.

18. UC Irvine (4-3). Last week: 13

UC Irvine lost to Fresno State but bounced back with a win against Sacramento State. The Anteaters look to stay perfect at home Saturday against Texas-Arlington.

19. Iona (4-3, 0-1 MAAC). Last week: 9

Iona was upset by Monmouth in its MAAC opener. The Gaels look to rebound this week against Rider and Indiana State.

20. Northeastern (6-2). Last week: 18

Northeastern bounced back from a loss at Harvard with a 12-point victory against Western Michigan. The Huskies are on the road until Jan. 5.

21. New Mexico State (4-5). Last week: 23

After several losses to high-quality opponents, New Mexico State finally beat one. The Aggies defeated UTEP, which had lost to on the road in November.

22. Akron (7-2). Last week: 22

Akron has won three games in a row, although none have been anything special.

23. Valparaiso (8-2). Last week: 21

Valparaiso’s seven-game wining streak ended Saturday with a loss to New Mexico. The Crusaders play two home games this week.

24. Eastern Washington (7-1). Last week: 25

Eastern Washington won at Seattle in its only game of the week. The Eagles continue their road trip at San Francisco Thursday.

25. Army (6-1). Last week: Unranked

Army has three true road wins, and its only loss is at Duke.
