Mid-Major Rankings for the Week of Dec. 29

1. Gonzaga (12-1, 1-0 WCC). Last week: 1

Gonzaga is in good shape at the start of conference play after winning at BYU in the WCC opener. The Bulldogs continue their road trip Monday at San Diego.

2. Wichita State (10-2). Last week: 2

After surviving a close, overtime game against Hawaii, Wichita State fell by six points to George Washington in the Diamond Head Classic championship. The Shockers move on to MVC play, which they open Wednesday at Drake.

3. Northern Iowa (11-1). Last week: 3

Northern Iowa held off South Dakota State in its final non-conference game. The Panthers head to MVC play, beginning with Evansville on Thursday.

4. Old Dominion (10-1). Last week: 5

Old Dominion closes non-conference play Monday against Mount St. Mary’s. The Monarchs are looking for their eighth consecutive win.

5. Green Bay (10-3). Last week: 9

Green Bay got revenge on Georgia State with a 78-61 victory Saturday. The Phoenix host Chicago State Wednesday in their final non-conference tuneup.

6. Harvard (7-3). Last week: 4

Harvard’s three-game road trip is off to a rough start. After getting blown out by Virginia, the Crimson lost 56-46 at Arizona State. They finish the trip Tuesday at Grand Canyon.

7. BYU (10-4, 0-1 WCC). Last week: 7

BYU’s three-game winning streak ended Saturday with a loss to Gonzaga. The Cougars finish off their four-game home stand Monday against Portland.

8. Wofford (9-3). Last week: 8

Wofford was blown out by West Virginia in its only game last week. The Terriers have another tough date ahead Wednesday at Duke.

9. Saint Mary’s (8-3, 1-0 WCC). Last week: 10

Saint Mary’s knocked off Santa Clara in its WCC opener. The Gaels host San Francisco on Monday, looking for their third straight win.

10. Stephen F. Austin (9-3). Last week: 11

Stephen F. Austin heads to Cal State Northridge for its final non-conference game Monday. The Lumberjacks have won eight games in a row.

11. Evansville (10-2). Last week: 13

Evansville struggled with Coppin State but survived, 85-80. The Aces are the fourth MVC team with 10 non-conference wins this season.

12. UTEP (8-4). Last week: 16

UTEP opens its Conference USA season this week at North Texas and Rice.

13. Georgia State (7-4). Last week: 6

Georgia State’s only impressive win had been against Green Bay, and then the Panthers lost by 17 Saturday when they rematched the Phoenix in Wisconsin. Still, the Panthers are the favorite to win the Sun Belt as conference play starts up.

14. Louisiana Tech (8-4). Last week: 12

Louisiana Tech has lost three of its last four, but two of the losses have been at Syracuse and NC State. The Bulldogs host Southern Arkansas Monday to finish non-conference play.

15. Yale (9-4). Last week: 15

Yale returns to action Tuesday at Sacred Heart after a 10-day break. The Bulldogs also travel to Vanderbilt this weekend.

16. Valparaiso (12-2). Last week: 19

Valparaiso finishes its non-conference slate Monday at James Madison.

17. Eastern Michigan (11-2). Last week: 20

Eastern Michigan blew out Coppin State and Concordia (Michigan) last week. The Eagles are riding a three-game winning streak entering MAC play.

18. Florida Gulf Coast (9-4). Last week: 14

Florida Gulf Coast had a tough week with road losses to Iona and Xavier. The Eagles wrap up their three-game road trip Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

19. Murray State (9-4). Last week: 22

Murray State knocked off Southern Illinois for its third true road win of the season. The Racers host Alabama A&M Tuesday before beginning OVC play this weekend.

20. Northeastern (7-4). Last week: 18

Northeastern is 3-4 in its last seven games. The Huskies have played nine of their 11 games away from home, and they have two true road tests this week at Richmond and Delaware.

21. Kent State (8-3). Last week: 21

Kent State’s four-game winning streak ended last Monday at the hands of UTEP. The Golden Flashes could be headed for another loss Tuesday at Kansas.

22. Iona (8-4). Last week: Unranked

Iona returns to the Mid-Major Rankings following convincing wins against Florida Gulf Coast and Drexel.

23. Eastern Washington (9-4). Last week: 23

Eastern Washington ended a three-game losing streak Monday against Lewis Clark State. The Eagles open Big Sky play Thursday against Weber State.

24. Army (9-2). Last week: 25

Army blew past Coast Guard on Sunday for its third straight win. The Black Knights move on to Wednesday’s Patriot League opener against Lafayette.

25. Toledo (7-4). Last week: Unranked

Following a rough start, Toledo has won five straight games going into a matchup Monday against Duke.
