The conference season in the new Big East tips off with games throughout New Year’s Eve, starting at 12 p.m. and going until around midnight on the east coast. DePaul (8-5) has the third game of the afternoon, visiting 8-3 Georgetown for a 5 p.m. ET tip.

In its last game, the DePaul¬†knocked off in-state rival Northwestern on Billy Garrett Jr.‘s buzzer-beater, 57-56. The Blue Demons, in the midst of a four-game road trip, will have a much stiffer challenge with Georgetown.

The Hoyas have an awful loss to Northeastern to November, but their other losses are to Final Four contenders Oregon and Kansas. They also have solid wins against Kansas State and Virginia Commonwealth, and they rank in the top 30 on Kenpom.

Sophomore guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera has emerged as Georgetown’s top scorer with 16.3 points per game, and he also averages 4.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 44.4% from three-point range.

Senior Markel Starks joins him to form possibly the best backcourt in the Big East. Starks is averaging 15.9 points and a team-best 4.5 assists per game.

UCLA transfer Joshua Smith has had a huge impact in the Hoyas’ frontcourt on the offensive end with 12.7 ¬†points per contest on 69.3% field-goal shooting, but he is still struggling on the offensive end.

Tuesday evening’s game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
