Chicago Weekly Awards, Jan. 9

Every week for the 2016-17 season, The Catch and Shoot will name a Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week, Team of the Week and Game of the Week among the five Division I schools in the Chicago area.

Here are the winners for the 8th week of the season (Jan. 2-Jan. 8):

Player of the Week

Milton Doyle, Loyola

Doyle set a career-high with 35 points in a win at Bradley, and he also recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds as well.

Earlier in the week, he flirted with a triple-double, posting 13 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in a victory against Northern Iowa.

All in all, he averaged 24 points on 66.7% shooting, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2 steals last week.

Honorable mention: Donte Ingram, Loyola; Trayvon Palmer, Chicago State

Freshman of the Week

Tarkus Ferguson, UIC

Ferguson was not as well known as some of the other Flames freshmen in high school, but so far he has been the best in the class. Last week, the 6’4″ guard averaged 15.5 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals as UIC went 1-1.

In a loss to Oakland, Ferguson posted his first double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Honorable mention: Godwin Boahen, UIC

Team of the Week

Loyola

After a disappointing start in MVC play, Loyola has won two in a row. The Ramblers are back on track for a top-three finish in the Valley.

Game of the Week

Oakland 58, UIC 57

UIC took the Horizon League favorite to the wire, but Tai Odiase had his game-winning layup attempt blocked by Jalen Hayes at the buzzer. After leading 37-31 at halftime, the Flames battled back from down 7 points in the final five minutes and led with two minutes remaining.
