When St. John’s freshman Richard Freudenberg wanted to sport Chris Mullin’s No. 20 for the Red Storm this season, Mullin challenged the German forward to a five-game series of H-O-R-S-E for the jersey. Freudenberg took the series to a fifth game but the 53-year-old Mullin still had enough game to persevere for the rubber match victory.
Even so, he decided to let Freudenberg wear his No. 20.
“He said I got him sweating and that was close enough,” Freudenberg told the New York Post. “I feel really honored to wear it.”
Freudenberg wore No. 9 in Germany, but NCAA rules prohibit players from wearing 6, 7, 8 or 9 to avoid miscommunications with referees’ hand signals. He will be the first St. John’s player to wear No. 20 since Mullin took the program to the Final Four in 1985.
