Mid-Major Rankings for the Week of Nov. 23

1. Gonzaga (2-0). Last week: 1

Gonzaga cruised to wins against Northern Arizona and Mount St. Mary’s to start the year.


2. Valparaiso (5-1). Last week: 3

Valparaiso’s perfect start ended Sunday at Oregon, but the Crusaders already have solid wins against Iona and Rhode Island.


3. Wichita State (2-1). Last week: 2

The Shockers upset by a solid Tulsa squad last week. They can make up for that this week at the Advocare Invitational.


4. Evansville (3-0). Last week: 9

Evansville recorded a very solid non-conference win Saturday against Belmont. The standout duo of D.J. Balentine and Egidijus Mockevicius combined for 53 points and 20 rebounds.


5. Central Michigan (2-0). Last week: 11

Central Michigan’s high-powered offense is still rolling. The Chippewas head to the Gulf Coast Showcase this week, and they will be one of the tournament’s favorites.



6. Northern Iowa (2-1). Last week: 12

Northern Iowa made a statement that it will once again be a factor in the MVC title race. The Panthers upset top-ranked North Carolina over the weekend.


7. Old Dominion (3-2). Last week: 6

After winning its first three, Old Dominion lost to Purdue and St. Joseph’s. The Monarchs are on the road this week with another tough game against VCU.


8. UAB (3-1). Last week: 4

UAB has won three straight since losing its opener to Auburn.


9. BYU (2-1). Last week: 10

BYU has two big matchups in the next week-and-a-half against Belmont and Utah.


10. Belmont (2-2). Last week: 13

Belmont has played a very difficult schedule so far, and that’s why a 2-2 start is in no way a cause for alarm. The Bruins have a good win at Marquette, and their losses are to Arizona State and Evansville.


11. Akron (3-1). Last week: 14

Akron already has a nice win against Arkansas, and it led Villanova late in the first half before losing by 19.


12. Stephen F. Austin (1-2). Last week: 4

Stephen F. Austin is still searching for its first win against a Division I school.


13. UC Irvine (3-0). Last week: 15

The Anteaters knocked off UCF in overtime for their first road win of the season.


14. South Dakota State (4-0). Last week: 18

South Dakota State already has a pair of solid road victories against Illinois State and TCU.


15. Oakland (1-1). Last week: 16

If you like scoring, watch some Oakland games. The Golden Grizzlies are averaging 90 points through their first two contests.


16. Hofstra (3-1). Last week: 19

Hofstra got a great win against Florida State at the Paradise Jam but then lost to South Carolina. The Pride face Indiana State for third place in the tournament.


17. Iona (1-2). Last week: 8

Iona fell flat on the road against Valparaiso and Oregon State. The Gaels won’t have many other chances for marquee non-conference victories.


18. Western Illinois (4-0). Last week: Not Ranked

Western Illinois won a thriller at nationally ranked Wisconsin and has blown out its three opponents since then. The Leathernecks can get another marquee victory Saturday at Creighton.


19. Pepperdine (1-2). Last week: 7

Pepperdine lost a nail-biter at Fresno State and then lost as expected to UCLA. The Waves play unbeaten Duquesne on Monday.


20. Princeton (2-0). Last week: 23

Princeton won its first two games of the year, both by single digits. The Tigers won’t face even a solid mid-major club until Dec. 5, when they travel to Stony Brook.


21. Yale (3-1). Last week: 25

Yale nearly knocked off American title contender SMU on the road Sunday. The Bulldogs have another tall test Wednesday at Duke.


22. NJIT (3-1). Last week: Not Ranked

NJIT has won three straight, and its only loss is to Kentucky.


23. Chattanooga (3-0). Last week: Not Ranked

Chattanooga has impressive road victories against Georgia and Illinois. The Mocs can take their resume to a whole new level Monday at Iowa State.


24. Columbia (2-2). Last week: 17

Columbia missed a pair of opportunities for solid wins, falling to mediocre Power-Five programs Kansas State and Northwestern.


25. Hawaii (3-0). Last week: Not Ranked

Hawaii is off to a 3-0 start, although it is yet to be tested on the road.
