Loyola announced Tuesday that freshman forward Marlon Jones will not attend the school in the fall. Instead, Jones will attend South Plains Community College.
“Unfortunately, Marlon did not meet his academic expectations this summer,” head coach Porter Moser said in a release. “We are still very committed to Marlon’s best interests but at this time he will be enrolling at South Plains Community College.”
The loss of the 6’9″ Jones deals Loyola a big blow. Although the Ramblers return their top five scorers from last season, their front court has very limited size. Senior Christian Thomas is the only returning forward, and he stands at only 6’5″.
Jones was the most talented player in Moser’s new recruiting class. He chose the Loyola over Baylor, Missouri, Purdue and St. John’s.
With Jones at community college, fellow 6’9″ freshman Julius Rajala and 6’7″ junior college transfer Montel James will become that much more important this fall.
