Billy Garrett Jr. poured in 26 points Friday as DePaul cruised to a 79-53 exhibition win against Rockhurst. The Blue Demons led by only six points at halftime but pushed their lead to 28 late in the game.
Garrett needed only nine field goal attempts to reach his game-high scoring total. The senior point guard made his living at the foul line with 14-of-14 shooting. He also had four turnovers and three steals.
Freshman guard Brandon Cyrus added 14 points and nine rebounds while senior guard R.J. Curington added 11 points. Freshman center Levi Cook contributed 8 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
DePaul’s frontcourt has been somewhat of a mystery this season after losing Tommy Hamilton and Rashaun Stimage from last season. Returning power forward Peter Ryckbosch has been hurt and could miss all of non-conference play. 6’5″ forward David Leitao III has also battled preseason injuries.
That left 6’7″ junior college transfer Tre’Darius McCallum and 6’7″ walk-on Joe Hanel starting in the frontcourt Friday. McCallum had six points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
In addition to Ryckbosch, senior guard Darrick Wood and ineligible transfers Max Strus and Austin Grandstaff did not suit up for Friday’s game.
