Every week for the 2016-17 season, The Catch and Shoot will name a Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week, Team of the Week and Game of the Week among the five Division I schools in the Chicago area.
Here are the winners for the 10th week of the season (Jan. 16-Jan. 22):
Player of the Week
Eli Cain, DePaul
Cain averaged 23.5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.5 steals in DePaul’s two games last week.
The 6’6″ sophomore nearly carried the Blue Demons to an upset over No. 13 Butler with a career-high 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting in a 70-69 loss.
Cain is now averaging 17.1 points to rank 7th in the Big East.
Honorable mention: Tai Odiase, UIC; Tre’Darius McCallum, DePaul; Scottie Lindsey, Northwestern
Freshman of the Week
Bruno Skokna, Loyola
Although Skokna was a non-factor in Loyola’s loss to Northern Iowa, he was a deciding factor in the team’s weekend victory over Evansville.
Skokna recorded 13 points and 2 assists off the bench as the Ramblers knocked off the Aces. The 6’4″ guard made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:06 remaining and then beat the shot clock for a layup with 1:16 left to give Loyola a 62-59 lead. He also made two free throws with five seconds left to ice the game.
Honorable mention: Tarkus Ferguson, UIC; Dominique Matthews, UIC
Team of the Week
The Wildcats can expect their first Top 25 ranking in more than six years after surviving at Ohio State on Sunday.
Game of the Week
Butler 70, DePaul 69 OT
It wasn’t a pretty game, but it was thrilling. After missing three free throws in the final minute of a tie game, Butler finally made one to go ahead 59-58 with six seconds left. DePaul had a chance to win, but Eli Cain made just 1 of 2 at the line to force overtime.
In overtime, Butler freshman Kamar Baldwin sank the game-winning free throws with three seconds left before DePaul senior Billy Garrett Jr. missed a prayer at the buzzer.
