Chicago Weekly Awards, Jan. 2

Every week for the 2016-17 season, The Catch and Shoot will name a Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week, Team of the Week and Game of the Week among the five Division I schools in the Chicago area.

Here are the winners for the 7th week of the season (Dec. 26-Jan. 1):

Player of the Week

Vic Law, Northwestern

Law got off to a hot start in Big Ten play, averaging 14 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4 assists as Northwestern went 1-1.

A 12-point, 12-rebound performance at Penn State secured the second double-double of Law’s career. The first also came against Penn State on Feb. 21, 2015 with 17 points and 11 boards.

Honorable mention: Trayvon Palmer, Chicago State, Scottie Lindsey, Northwestern; Donte Ingram, Loyola

Freshman of the Week

Godwin Boahen, UIC

Fresh off a triple-double, Boahen was among the best players on the floor in UIC’s loss to Valparaiso. The 5’11” guard posted 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Honorable mention: Tarkus Ferguson, UIC; Cam Satterwhite, Loyola

Team of the Week

Northwestern

Although the Wildcats dropped an ugly loss to Michigan State, they were also the only Chicago team to win last week, defeating Penn State on the road in their Big Ten opener.

Game of the Week

No. 1 Villanova 68, DePaul 65

DePaul had the top team in the nation on the ropes late in the second half, but Billy Garrett Jr.’s desperation three at the buzzer to force overtime just missed. Had the Blue Demons survived, it would have been among the biggest upsets in college basketball history.
