Chicago Weekly Awards, Jan. 16

Every week for the 2016-17 season, The Catch and Shoot will name a Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week, Team of the Week and Game of the Week among the five Division I schools in the Chicago area.

Here are the winners for the 9th week of the season (Jan. 9-Jan. 15):

Player of the Week

Milton Doyle, Loyola

It feels like it’s only a matter of time until Doyle gets that elusive triple-double. The 6’4″ guard averaged 20.5 points, 7 rebounds and 7.5 assists last week.

The only weak spot in his game was 1-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc over the two games, but he more than made up for that in other aspects.

Doyle led the charge in Loyola’s comeback victory against Missouri State, and even had six points on one possession as he had a rare and-one on a flagrant foul, made both free throws and then made a layup as the Ramblers retained possession.

Honorable mentions: Dererk Pardon, Northwestern; Scottie Lindsey, Northwestern; Aundre Jackson, Loyola

Freshman of the Week

Dominique Matthews, UIC

Matthews averaged 16 points with a 66.7 effective field goal percentage in two games last week. Fresh off 11 points in a win against Cleveland State, Matthews exploded for a career-high 21 points along with three assists to help UIC defeat Youngstown State in overtime.

Honorable mention: Isiah Brown, Northwestern; K.J. Santos, UIC

Team of the Week

Northwestern

Northwestern and UIC both went 2-0 last week, but Northwestern had better wins against Rutgers and Iowa. The Wildcats are still in great position to make their first-ever NCAA Tournament thanks to those victories.

Game of the Week

DePaul 64, Providence 63

The Blue Demons came back from nine points down in the final two minutes to stun the Friars on Billy Garrett Jr.’s and-one with 4.7 seconds remaining. That’s the second year in a row DePaul has upset Providence at home.
