Chicago Weekly Awards, Jan. 11

Every week The Catch and Shoot will name a Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week, Team of the Week and Game of the Week from the five Division I schools in the Chicago area.

Here are the winners for the eighth week of the season (Jan. 4-Jan. 10):

Player of the Week

Dikembe Dixson, UIC

Dixson, a 6-foot-7 freshman, had another dominant week, averaging 25 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games. While the Flames are struggling, Dixson has been a bright spot bringing optimism for the future.

His 28-point outburst Sunday against Oakland allowed UIC to at least stay close into the second half. It was the second time this season where Dixson has scored 28 points.

Honorable mention: Darrick Wood, DePaul

Freshman of the Week

Dikembe Dixson, UIC

Honorable mentions: Anthony Eaves, Chicago State; Aaron Falzon, Northwestern

Team of the Week

Northwestern got upset on its home floor by Ohio State, but the Wildcats bounced back with a dominant win at Minnesota in their best performance of the season.

Game of the Week

Missouri State 56, Loyola 54

After Milton Doyle’s steal and basket with nine seconds left tied the score 54-54, Missouri State guard Dequon Miller raced down the floor and hit a game-winning runner with 3.4 seconds remaining.
